When you think of Tulum, the first thing that comes to mind is either the sandy white beaches or the lush tropical jungle. However in recent years, Tulum’s cenotes have become increasingly more popular.
From the most popular Gran Cenote with its open air cave, to Rio Secreto, a completely closed cave, the amazing cenotes near Tulum are just waiting to be explored.
Having visited, and loved all of our experiences visiting Tulum’s Cenotes, here are my top cenotes in Tulum!

GRAN CENOTE
Location: Quintana Roo 109, 77796 Tulum, Q.R., Mexico
Items to bring:
- Towel to dry off
- Sunscreen
- Water shoes
- Waterproof Camera
Type of Cenote: Open air cave with snorkeling tunnels.
How to get there: The best way to get to Gran Cenote is car. However if you did not rent a car, there are plenty of local tours that will take you there. My advice is to check out Viator or Tripadvisor for the best tour package.
Best time to visit: I definitely recommend getting here well before noon. I made the mistake of sleeping in the day we were suppose to visit the Gran Cenote and didn’t arrive until past noon. When we arrived, you could barely see the cenote because there were so many people.
